Nigerian Woman

When in 2001 Agbani Darego won the miss world competition held in South Africa. She could not have imagined the chain of events to follow. The next contest would be held in the winner’s country, Nigeria. Just a year before, several northern states had adopted the Islamic Sharia Law. To make things worse, the pageant coincided with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Trouble was inevitable. At the same time Amina lawal was sentenced to death by stoning by a Sharia court in Katsina. This is the setup of the time we were in Nigeria. We travelled extensivley to meet women from different sectors of the Nigerian society, witnessed Amina's last court, and had an exclusive interview with her at the end.
